Properties and usage:

Anticancerous and antibacterial, lowers fever and acts on the gall bladder. Astringent and antidiarrhetic.

Effects on the organism:

Once introduced in North-America, the Amerindians used barberry to treat stomach ulcers.

The barberry contains berberine which is antibacterial and helps to evacuate bile. It also acts on the gall bladder in that it increases the production of bile and relieves aches, gall stones and jaundice. Due to its powerful antiseptic properties, it treats amoebic dysentery, cholera and other similar gastro-intestinal infections.

The bark is astringent, anti-diarrhetic and promotes the healing of the digestive tract.

Barberry also treats eczema and psoriasis.

Caution: not to be taken longer than 4 to 6 weeks consecutively. Not recommended during pregnancy. It is toxic in large doses.

Principal constituents: isoquinoleic alcaloid because the ingredients berberine and berbarmine are both antibacterial. The alcaloids could also conceal anti-cancerous virtues.
