Properties and usage:

Sedative, tonic for the nervous system, antispasmodic.

Effects on the organism:

The Amerindians used this plant as a brain tonic, saying that it chased away bad spirits.

Herbalists of that time were the first to use scullcap as a tonic, ensuring that its action on the nervous system was more effective than that of other plants. They prescribed it to treat hysteria, epilepsy, convulsions and rabies, as well as schizophrenia.

Today this plant is used for the same purpose, but especially for stress and anxiety. Its antispasmodic action make is an effective remedy for muscular contractions. Often, it is prescirbed by itself or associated to other sedative plants.

The Cherokees used scullcap to stimulate the menstrual cycle, relieve painful breasts and facilitate the expulsion of the placenta.

It has effective anti-inflammatory properties for intestinal infections.

Principal constituents: flavonoids, iridoids, essential oil, tanins.
